A resort no car can enter
Avoriaz describes itself as a 100 % pedestrian resort, and it means it literally: the village is built on a shelf above Morzine and closed to traffic. Whatever brings you up — taxi, bus, your own car — stops at the car parks on the edge of the resort. From there you walk, or you take a horse-drawn sledge or a snow-cab to your accommodation.
That last stage is the part travellers underestimate. With two suitcases and a ski bag each, in the dark, on snow, it is not a stroll. Ask your accommodation before you travel whether they arrange the transfer from the car park — most do, and it is far easier arranged in advance than negotiated on arrival at 22:00.

Bus, shuttle and train
Shared shuttles run from Geneva Airport through the season and cost markedly less per person, at the price of waiting for a full vehicle and stopping in Morzine and elsewhere on the way. They suit two people travelling light far better than a family with ski bags.
By bus, the practical route is Geneva to Morzine, then the Morzine–Avoriaz shuttle for the last climb. It is the cheapest way up and the slowest, and the connection is what makes or breaks the journey — check that the last shuttle of the day still runs when your flight lands.
By train, Avoriaz has no station of its own. The nearest are Cluses (42 km) and Thonon (44 km), both roughly an hour from the resort by road, so the train only makes sense if you are already arriving on the rail network rather than flying into Geneva.
Self-drive and where you leave the car
The road runs out of Geneva on the motorway, then up the valley through Morzine and on to the resort entrance. In winter it is a mountain road: rental cars from Geneva should be booked with winter tyres, and chains are worth having in the boot.
