FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about Geneva Airport.

What’s the fastest way from Geneva Airport to Geneva city centre?

The train (CFF/SBB) is the fastest at 7 minutes from Geneva Airport station to Geneva-Cornavin (main station), with frequent departures through the day. Free with a Geneva Transport Card, issued by your Geneva accommodation. Pre-booked Mercedes taxi from CHF 130 fixed all-inclusive door-to-door takes 15 minutes.

How early should I arrive at Geneva Airport?

2 hours before for Schengen flights, 3 hours for non-Schengen (UK, US, Asia, etc.) during peak windows (Christmas, ski holidays, Watches & Wonders, WEF Davos week). Genève Aéroport publishes a live security waiting time for the international sector, but no average: it says waiting times vary with how busy it is and when you go through, and advises allowing a margin.

Is there free Wi-Fi at Geneva Airport?

Yes. Free unlimited Wi-Fi throughout Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Connect to “Free_WiFi_GVA” network, no registration needed. Speed averages in 2026.

Where are the lounges at Geneva Airport?

Genève Aéroport lists four lounges for its VIP Pack — Swissport Horizon and Marhaba for Schengen flights (06:00–20:30 daily), Crystal Aspire and Marhaba for intercontinental and UK flights. Airlines and card programmes open others: four independent lounges take Priority Pass — Horizon by Swissport, Crystal by Aspire and two Marhaba rooms — plus the airline lounges, which are not for sale. T2 has 1 lounge (Aspire walk-in available). Full comparison →

What’s the difference between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2?

T1 is the main terminal — all scheduled commercial flights, all airlines, all destinations. T2 is the seasonal terminal — Genève Aéroport opens it only on weekends during the winter period, for selected charter and scheduled flights arriving from abroad, and closes it to the public outside the winter season. It is about 300 m on foot from T1, opposite car park P51. If your boarding pass says T2, double-check 24h before flight.

Can I leave luggage at Geneva Airport?

Yes. Baggage storage available 24/7 in Terminal 1 arrivals (level 0). The airport publishes no tariff for it; payment is on site and the lockers are accessible around the clock. More airport facts →

Is Geneva Airport open 24/7?

No — Terminal 1 is open 04:00–00:00, and Genève Aéroport does not let you stay inside during the night closure. Shops, restaurants and lounges close late evening. The taxi rank outside arrivals never closes, but drivers only start queuing around 05:00 for the first flights. Public transport (train, bus, tram) runs until ~00:30 with limited night service after.

What currency should I use at Geneva Airport?

Swiss Francs (CHF) is the local currency. Euros (EUR) are widely accepted at the airport — but change given back in CHF. Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, UnionPay) accepted everywhere. ATMs are abundant, withdraw CHF for the best rate. Exchange offices charge ~5% spread.

Geneva Airport — frequently asked questions

How do I get from Geneva Airport to the city centre?

The train (CFF/SBB) is fastest: about 7 minutes from the airport station to Geneva-Cornavin main station, with several departures an hour, typically 10 to 20 minutes apart. If you are staying in a Geneva hotel, hostel or campsite, ask for the Geneva Transport Card: it covers zone 10 public transport free of charge, including the airport-to-Cornavin leg. A pre-booked Mercedes taxi takes around 15 minutes door-to-door.

How much does a taxi from Geneva Airport cost?

A standard metered taxi from the 24/7 rank into central Geneva runs higher than public transport, with the fare depending on traffic and time of day. For a predictable price, a pre-booked Mercedes transfer starts at CHF 135 fixed and all-inclusive, door-to-door, with the driver tracking your flight and 60 minutes of free wait after landing — no surcharge for delays.

Which terminal do I use at Geneva Airport, T1 or T2?

Terminal 1 is the main terminal and handles all scheduled commercial flights, every airline and every destination. Terminal 2 is the seasonal terminal: Genève Aéroport opens it only on weekends during the winter period, for selected charter and scheduled flights arriving from abroad, and closes it to the public outside the winter season. It is about 300 m on foot from T1, opposite car park P51. If your boarding pass says T2, double-check 24 hours before your flight.

Is there free Wi-Fi at Geneva Airport?

Yes. Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Just connect to the Free_WiFi_GVA network — no registration or login is needed. It is fast enough to stream, work or video-call while you wait. Coverage extends across the gates, lounges and the arrivals and departures halls.

How early should I arrive at Geneva Airport before my flight?

Plan on 2 hours before a Schengen flight and 3 hours for non-Schengen routes (UK, US, Asia and similar) during peak windows such as Christmas, ski holidays, Watches & Wonders and WEF Davos week. Genève Aéroport shows a live security waiting time for the international sector but publishes no average — it says the wait varies with the crowd and the hour, and advises allowing a margin. Check the live figure on gva.ch before you leave.

What is the French side of Geneva Airport and can I use it?

Geneva Airport straddles the Swiss–French border and has a dedicated French sector (secteur France) on the French side, with its own access to and from France. If you are staying in a Geneva hotel, hostel or campsite, ask for the Geneva Transport Card: it covers zone 10 public transport free of charge, including the airport-to-Cornavin leg. Use the French sector only if your onward journey is specifically into neighbouring France.
