The GVA peculiarity
GVA has two sides — Swiss (main terminal) and French (Secteur France). Where you pick up affects cross-border rules, insurance and pricing.
Swiss pickup (default)
All 8 operators have desks on the Swiss side. Cars registered in Switzerland (CH plate). Motorway vignette (CHF 40/year) included or sticker on windscreen. Cross into France/Italy/Germany freely with the Green Card.
French pickup (Secteur France)
Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Sixt also have a desk in the Secteur France (separate entrance, road access from France). Cars registered in France (FR plate). Useful if you need to drop in France (Lyon, Annecy, Chamonix) — cheaper one-way fees vs Swiss desk.
One-way fees
Same brand same country: free or low fee (CHF 50–100). Cross-border (CH → FR or vice versa): CHF 150–400. Long one-way to other airports (Zurich, Milan, Lyon): CHF 200–500. Always compare both pickup sides for cross-border trips.
Insurance & deductible
Standard rates include CDW with a deductible of CHF 1500–2500. Buy excess insurance from a third party (iCarHireInsurance, Allianz) for CHF 5–10/day rather than the agency’s CHF 20–35/day excess waiver.
Car rental at GVA — FAQ
Where are the car rental desks at Geneva Airport?
All major operators (Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Thrifty, Goldcar) have desks in the arrivals hall on Level 0, directly opposite the baggage claim exit. Vehicle pickup is one level below, in the underground rental car park accessed by elevator from each desk. The French-side rentals (Secteur France) have separate desks — useful if you’re driving into France only.
How much does it cost to rent a car at Geneva Airport?
Average daily rate in 2026 for an economy/compact (VW Polo, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 class): CHF 50–75 depending on operator and season. Peak ski weekends (December–February Saturdays) +30–50%. SUV: CHF 110–160/day. Premium (Mercedes, BMW): CHF 150–250/day. Always check the total including insurance, taxes and motorway vignette before booking.
Do I need a motorway vignette to drive from GVA in Switzerland?
Yes — Swiss motorways require an annual vignette (CHF 40) displayed on the windscreen. All Swiss-side rentals at GVA include the vignette in the price (already affixed). If you rent from the French side (Secteur France) and plan to use Swiss motorways, you must buy the vignette separately at the border or at a Swiss petrol station — not included by default.
Can I drive a Geneva rental car into France or Italy?
Yes — Swiss rental cars are covered for cross-border travel in the EU/EFTA via the standard Green Card insurance, included in all rentals. You don’t need extra paperwork. Drop off in another country is allowed but incurs a one-way fee (CHF 150–500 depending on destination and operator). For ski trips into France (Chamonix, Megève, Tignes), this is the most common setup.
Are winter tyres included on GVA rental cars?
Yes between November 1 and April 30 — all Swiss rental operators at GVA fit winter tyres (M+S 3PMSF certified) as standard during winter season. Snow chains are NOT included by default — request them when booking (CHF 5–15/day extra). For Alpine destinations (Verbier, Chamonix, Val d’Isère), chains are legally required on certain marked sections in winter — keep them in the boot even if you don’t expect snow.
