Geneva Airport — your questions answered.

The questions travellers actually ask about Geneva Airport (GVA · LSGG) — getting to the city, security, terminals, lounges and baggage — answered in plain English, with links to the full guides.

Getting to & from the airport

How do I get from Geneva Airport to the city centre?

The fastest way is the train: Genève-Aéroport station is inside the terminal and reaches Geneva Cornavin in about 7 minutes. Arriving passengers ride free with the 80-minute Unireso ticket from the baggage hall. Buses #5 and #10 also serve the city, and taxis or a pre-booked Mercedes take 15–20 minutes by road. See our train guide and free ticket guide.

Is public transport from Geneva Airport really free?

For arriving passengers, yes — collect the free 80-minute Unireso ticket from the machine in baggage claim. It covers the train to Cornavin plus all buses, trams and boats in Geneva’s zone 10. For journeys beyond the zone, or if you’re departing, buy a normal ticket. Full details on our free transport ticket page.

How much is a taxi from Geneva Airport to the centre?

A metered taxi to central Geneva is roughly CHF 35–45 and takes 15–20 minutes depending on traffic. A pre-booked Mercedes transfer is a fixed CHF 100 with flight tracking and a driver waiting in arrivals — better value for groups, late arrivals or onward trips to ski resorts. Compare on our transfers guide.

Can I take a direct train from Geneva Airport to ski resorts or other cities?

Many cities are direct from the airport platform — Lausanne (~49 min), Montreux (~1 h 14), Bern (~2 h) and Sion or Visp for the Valais. Resorts like Chamonix, Megève and Verbier aren’t on the Swiss rail line, so a road transfer or shuttle is faster. See the train guide and transfer destinations.

Security, check-in & terminals

How long is the security wait at Geneva Airport?

Usually under 10 minutes off-peak, but it rises at early-morning and late-afternoon peaks and especially on winter ski-season Saturdays, when it can reach 30–45 minutes. A paid Priority Lane from around CHF 12 skips the queue. See our security guide and priority lane.

How many terminals does Geneva Airport have?

Geneva is essentially one building. Nearly all scheduled flights use the main terminal (T1); the smaller T2 wing opens seasonally, mainly for winter ski-charter flights. Both share the same train station, security and baggage halls. See the terminals guide and airport map.

How early should I arrive at Geneva Airport?

About 2 hours before a European flight, and 2.5–3 hours for long-haul or busy ski-season weekends. Check-in and bag-drop typically close 40–60 minutes before departure, so that deadline matters more than the security queue. Travelling hand-luggage-only lets you go straight to security — see the airlines guide.

What are the liquid rules at Geneva Airport?

Liquids go in containers of maximum 100 ml, all inside one transparent re-sealable bag of about 1 litre. Some lanes have new CT scanners where liquids and laptops can stay in your bag — follow staff instructions. Medication and baby food are allowed in larger amounts if declared. Full list on our security guide.

Lounges, baggage & services

Can I use a lounge at Geneva Airport without business class?

Yes. Alongside alliance and business-class lounges, pay-per-visit options like Aspire (from about CHF 50) and SkyView (from about CHF 65) welcome any traveller, and Priority Pass is accepted at several. See prices and access rules on our lounges guide.

Which airlines fly from Geneva Airport?

Around 50 airlines, led by easyJet and the home carrier SWISS, plus Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Iberia, Emirates (daily A380), Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and many more — with extra charter capacity in winter. Full list and baggage rules on our airlines guide.

Where do I find lost property at Geneva Airport?

Items left in the terminal go to the airport lost & found; items left on board or relating to checked baggage are handled by your airline or its ground agent. Act quickly and keep your boarding pass and bag tag. Step-by-step contacts on our lost & found guide.

Is Geneva Airport open 24 hours?

The terminal does not operate flights overnight and is not a comfortable place to sleep; there’s a curfew on night movements. If you have a very early flight or a long layover, a nearby airport hotel is the better option. See our overnight guide and hotels near the airport.

Can I claim a VAT refund at Geneva Airport?

Yes — non-residents can reclaim Swiss VAT on qualifying purchases. Get your forms validated before security or at the customs desk, then refund via Global Blue or Planet. Details and the comparison on our VAT refund guide.
