The easy way

Private transfer — door to door

The fastest and least stressful option, especially with ski or snowboard gear.

A pre-booked private transfer meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to your chalet or hotel door — roughly one hour, no changes, no waiting for other passengers. It is the obvious choice when you are carrying skis, travelling as a family or group, or landing late, and your driver tracks your flight so a delay is never a problem. Vehicles range from saloons to spacious vans (ideal for gear), and the price is fixed and confirmed before you travel — no surge pricing on a busy Saturday. Drivers know the A40 and the valley, and carry the legally required winter equipment in season.

On a budget

Shared shuttle & bus

Cheaper, scheduled, and fine if you travel light and can flex your timing.

  • Shared shuttle: several operators run door-to-door minibuses that pick up multiple parties — cheaper than a private car, but expect detours and some waiting. Book ahead in ski season.
  • Bus: FlixBus and other coaches connect Geneva Airport directly to Chamonix in roughly 1 h 40–2 h 10, with departures about every hour. The lowest-cost option — best with light luggage rather than a full ski bag. See our buses & coaches guide.
The scenic, slower route

By train

There is no direct train — but the mountain rail in is memorable if you have time.

Travelling by train from Geneva Airport to Chamonix takes 3–4 hours with at least one or two changes. The two common routes are via Annemasse (France) or via Martigny in Switzerland, where you join the scenic Mont-Blanc Express up the valley. It is slow and impractical with heavy gear, but the Martigny route is one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the Alps. Driving yourself

Car rental & the winter rules

Great for touring the valley — but the Alps have strict winter-equipment laws.

The drive is straightforward — the A40 “Autoroute Blanche” runs almost door to door in about an hour. Two things to plan for: winter tyres or snow chains are legally required in the Chamonix mountain zone from 1 November to 31 March under France’s Loi Montagne. The €135 fine written into the texts is not currently enforced — police issue warnings rather than tickets — but you genuinely need the equipment on snowy roads, so make sure a rental car is winter-ready. If you drive the usual Swiss route you also need a motorway vignette. Chamonix is in France, so carry a passport or ID for the border. If you rent, confirm the car is winter-equipped before you set off.
