The easy way

Private transfer — door to door

The fastest and least stressful option, especially with ski or snowboard gear.

A pre-booked private transfer meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to your chalet or hotel door in Méribel, Méribel-Mottaret or Les Allues — roughly 2 h 15, no changes, no waiting for other passengers and no scramble for the Moûtiers shuttle. It is the obvious choice when you are carrying skis, travelling as a family or group, or landing late, and your driver tracks your flight so a delay is never a problem. The final climb from Moûtiers up into the Allues valley is a steep, winding mountain road — exactly where you want an experienced local driver rather than an unfamiliar rental in fresh snow. Vehicles range from saloons to spacious vans (ideal for gear), and the price is fixed and confirmed before you travel — no surge pricing on a busy transfer Saturday. Drivers carry the legally required winter equipment in season.

Shared shuttle & bus

Cheaper, scheduled, and fine if you travel light and can flex your timing.

  • Shared shuttle: several operators run door-to-door minibuses that pick up multiple parties — cheaper than a private car, but expect detours and some waiting before you reach the resort. Book ahead in ski season, as Tarentaise transfer Saturdays sell out fast.
  • Bus: seasonal coaches (Altibus and others) run from Geneva Airport up the Tarentaise valley to Moûtiers and on to Méribel in roughly 3 h–3 h 30, mainly on winter weekends. The lowest-cost option — best with light luggage rather than a full ski bag. See our buses & coaches guide.
The scenic, slower route

By train

There is no train to the resort — but the Tarentaise line to Moûtiers, then a bus up, is a fine car-free option if you have time.

There is no train all the way to Méribel — the railway ends at Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains, the gateway station for Les 3 Vallées. By train from Geneva Airport to Moûtiers takes around 3 hours with a change (typically via Chambéry), and from Moûtiers it is another 30–45 minutes by Altibus shuttle up the valley to the Méribel villages. The bus station sits right in the train-station car park, so the connection is easy. It is slow and impractical with heavy gear, but the run up the Tarentaise is a scenic, car-free way in. Driving yourself

Car rental & the winter rules

Great for touring the valley — but the Alps have strict winter-equipment laws.

The drive runs via the A40 “Autoroute Blanche”, then the A41 and A430 toward Albertville, the N90 up the Tarentaise to Moûtiers, and finally the winding climb into the Allues valley — about 2 h 15 in good conditions. Two things to plan for. First, the Loi Montagne: in this mountain zone, winter tyres or snow chains are legally required from 1 November to 31 March — the €135 fine in the texts is not currently enforced (police give warnings) but you genuinely need them on snowy roads, and the climb above Moûtiers is no place to be caught without. Second, if you drive the usual Swiss leg out of Geneva you need a motorway vignette. Méribel is in France (Savoie), so carry a passport or ID for the border. If you rent, confirm the car is winter-equipped before you set off.

Geneva to Méribel — FAQ

How long does it take to get from Geneva Airport to Méribel?

By car or private transfer, about 2 h 15 for the roughly 180 km up the Tarentaise valley — allow longer in heavy traffic or snow. The bus takes around 3 h–3 h 30, and the train to Moûtiers plus the shuttle up totals 3 h 30–4 hours.

What is the best way to get from Geneva to Méribel?

For most travellers — especially with ski gear, a family or a late flight — a private door-to-door transfer is the fastest and least stressful, at about 2 h 15 with a fixed price and no change at Moûtiers. The bus is the cheapest if you travel light; self-drive suits those who want to tour Les 3 Vallées.

Is there a train from Geneva Airport to Méribel?

Not to the resort itself. The nearest station is Moûtiers, about 3 hours from Geneva by train with one change; from there it is a further 30–45 minutes by Altibus shuttle up to the Méribel villages, with the bus station right beside the train station.

Do I need snow chains to drive from Geneva to Méribel?

In winter you genuinely need them. Under France’s Loi Montagne, winter tyres or snow chains are legally required in this mountain zone from 1 November to 31 March. The €135 fine in the texts is not currently enforced — police give warnings — but you really do need them on snowy roads, especially the climb above Moûtiers. If you rent, confirm the car is winter-equipped before you leave the airport.

Do I need a passport to travel from Geneva to Méribel?

Yes — Méribel is in France (Savoie) and Geneva Airport is on the Swiss side, so you cross a border. Carry a valid passport or national ID — checks are occasional but possible, and may be reinstated during major events.

How much is a transfer from Geneva Airport to Méribel?

It depends on the vehicle, the number of passengers and the season (winter Saturdays are busiest). A private transfer gives you a fixed price confirmed before you travel — request a quote for your exact dates rather than risk surge pricing on arrival.
