The easy way

Private transfer — door to door

The fastest and least stressful option, and Annecy is so close it barely feels like a journey.

A pre-booked private transfer meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to your hotel or holiday rental in the old town or lakeside — roughly 35 to 45 minutes, no changes, no waiting for other passengers. Because Annecy is the nearest alpine destination to Geneva Airport, it is an effortless transfer even after a long flight, and a popular day-trip too. It is the obvious choice when you are travelling as a family or group, carrying luggage, or landing late, and your driver tracks your flight so a delay is never a problem. Vehicles range from saloons to spacious vans, and the price is fixed and confirmed before you travel — no surge pricing on a busy summer Saturday. Drivers know the A41 and the lake road well.

Shared shuttle & bus

Cheaper, scheduled, and a great fit for Annecy thanks to fast direct coaches.

  • Shared shuttle: several operators run door-to-door minibuses that pick up multiple parties — cheaper than a private car, but expect detours and some waiting. Book ahead in the summer high season.
  • Bus: FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus connect Geneva Airport directly to Annecy in roughly 50 minutes, with several departures a day. This is the lowest-cost option and unusually quick for Annecy because the route is direct — best with light luggage. See our buses & coaches guide.
The scenic, slower route

By train

Annecy has its own SNCF station — but there is no direct line from the airport.

Travelling by train from Geneva Airport to Annecy takes around 2 hours 30 minutes with one or two changes. You first ride into the city to Genève-Cornavin, then continue on the Léman Express via Annemasse in France, where you join the onward TER service down to Annecy. Annecy does have a proper railway station in the centre, so the train drops you right in town — but with the changes it is far slower than the 50-minute bus or a direct transfer. Buy the free 80-minute Geneva transport ticket in baggage reclaim for the first leg into the city.

Driving yourself

Car rental, the border & the Swiss vignette

A short, easy drive — the main things to plan are the border crossing and Swiss tolls.

The drive is short and straightforward — the A41 motorway runs almost door to door in about 35 to 45 minutes. Two things to plan for. First, Annecy is in France (Haute-Savoie) while Geneva Airport sits on the Swiss side, so you cross a border — carry a valid passport or national ID. Second, if you use Swiss motorways at all you need a motorway vignette (the annual toll sticker), so confirm a rental car already has one or buy it before you set off. Unlike the high mountain ski resorts, Annecy is a low-altitude lakeside city, so winter tyres and snow chains are rarely a concern for the city itself; note only that the wider Haute-Savoie département applies France’s “Loi Montagne” winter-equipment rules on designated mountain roads from 1 November to 31 March if you plan to drive up into the surrounding hills.

What is the best way to get from Geneva to Annecy?

For most travellers — especially with luggage, a family or a late flight — a private door-to-door transfer is the fastest and least stressful, at about 40 minutes with a fixed price. The direct bus is the cheapest if you travel light, and self-drive suits those who want to tour the lake and surrounding villages.

Is there a direct train from Geneva Airport to Annecy?

No. There is no direct train — the journey takes around 2 h 30 with one or two changes, going first to Genève-Cornavin and then on the Léman Express via Annemasse in France to Annecy’s town-centre station.

Usually not. Annecy is a low-altitude lakeside city, so winter equipment is rarely needed for the drive itself. It depends on the vehicle, the number of passengers and the season (summer weekends are busiest). A private transfer gives you a fixed price confirmed before you travel — request a quote for your exact dates rather than risk surge pricing on arrival.
