Claim your Swiss VAT refund at GVA.
Non-residents can reclaim 8.1% Swiss VAT on purchases over CHF 300, processed at customs in the departures hall. Allow an extra 20 minutes.
Who can claim VAT refund
Three conditions must all be met for a Swiss VAT refund.
1. Non-Swiss resident
You must live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Foreign passport not enough — proof of residence (foreign address, foreign passport, no Swiss permit) required.
2. CHF 300+ purchase per shop per day
The minimum is CHF 300 per shop, per day — not cumulative across shops. Buy CHF 200 + CHF 200 in two shops = no refund.
3. Export within 30 days
Goods must leave Switzerland within 30 days of purchase, in your hand luggage or hold baggage. Customs may ask to inspect them.
The détaxe procedure at GVA
From shop to refund — five steps, ~20 minutes extra at the airport.
| Step | Where | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. At the shop | Geneva luxury boutiques, watchmakers, department stores | Ask for a “tax-free shopping form” (Global Blue or Planet Tax Free). Show passport. Fill in name, address, passport number. |
| 2. At GVA, before check-in | Customs office (Douane), Level 1 departures, near rows 90–100 | Present form, receipts, goods (sometimes inspected) and passport. Customs stamps the form. |
| 3. Drop bag (if goods in hold) | Your airline check-in | Drop checked bag with the stamped goods. Keep cabin items for airside inspection if needed. |
| 4. Cash or card refund | Global Blue / Planet counter, Level 1 airside or landside | Stamped form returned for cash (CHF or EUR, 3% fee) or credit card credit (6–8 weeks, no fee). |
| 5. Or mail it home | Drop in tax-free envelope | If you miss the counter, post the stamped form back to Global Blue/Planet — refund to card in 4–8 weeks. |
How much you actually get back
Swiss VAT is 8.1% — but the refund is reduced by processing fees. Cash refunds cost more than card.

| CHF 500 | CHF 37.50 | CHF 32.50 | CHF 27.50 |

VAT refund at Geneva Airport — FAQ
What is the Swiss VAT rate I can reclaim at Geneva Airport?
The standard Swiss VAT rate is 8.1% as of 2024 (increased from 7.7%). Non-residents can reclaim this on goods purchased in Switzerland and exported within 30 days, with a minimum spend of CHF 300 per shop per day. After Global Blue or Planet Tax Free processing fees, you typically get back ~6.5% (card refund) or ~5.5% (cash refund) of the purchase price.
Where is the customs office for tax refund at GVA?
The Swiss customs office (Douane) for export validation is on Level 1 departures, near check-in rows 90–100. Present your tax-free form, receipts, goods (sometimes inspected), and passport. Customs stamps the form. Then proceed to Global Blue or Planet Tax Free counters for refund (landside or airside, near security). Allow an extra 15–20 minutes for the procedure.
Can I claim VAT refund after I’ve checked my bag?
Only if the goods are with you in cabin baggage — customs may ask to inspect them. If your purchases are in checked baggage, you must visit the customs office BEFORE you drop the bag at airline check-in. Most shops at Geneva luxury boutiques will advise you to validate the form first and check in second. If you’ve already checked in, ask your airline staff to retrieve the bag — possible but adds 30+ minutes.
Do I need to spend CHF 300 in one shop?
Yes — CHF 300 minimum per shop, per day. You cannot combine receipts from different shops. CHF 200 + CHF 200 in two different shops = no refund. Some department stores (Manor, Globus) treat themselves as a single shop across departments — confirm at point of sale. Watch boutiques (Rolex, Patek, Audemars) easily exceed the threshold on a single watch.
What if I forgot to get the customs stamp at GVA?
You can validate the form at any Swiss border crossing within 30 days of purchase. If you’ve already left Switzerland without a stamp, your refund is lost — Swiss customs does not stamp retroactively. To avoid this, plan to arrive at GVA 30 minutes earlier than usual on the day of your departure. Some shops offer an “early refund” option where they advance the refund to your card and you mail back the stamped form — convenient but with strict 21-day return deadlines.
