Geneva Airport is just 6 minutes from the city centre by train — so even a few hours between flights is enough to drop your bags, see the lake and the Old Town, and be back at the gate on time. Here is how to do it.
How much time do you really need?
A rough rule: with a 4-hour layover or more, leaving the airport is easy and worth it.
- Drop your bags first. Left-luggage lockers and a staffed baggage-storage desk are in the airport — see airport services — so you don’t have to drag a suitcase around town.
- The train is the key. Geneva-Cornavin (city centre) is a 6-minute ride from the station beneath the terminal, with departures every few minutes. Grab the free 80-minute public-transport ticket from the machine in baggage reclaim before you leave.
- Mind the border. If you arrive on a non-Schengen flight, clear passport control before you head out, and keep your passport on you.
- Leave a buffer. Plan to be back at the airport ~2 hours before a Schengen departure (3 hours for non-Schengen). The city is close, but build in slack.

If you have longer
A 6-hour-plus layover opens up the lake and the neighbourhoods.
- A lake cruise. CGN boats leave from the city quays for a short loop of Lake Geneva — the easiest way to see the city from the water.
- Carouge. A few tram stops south, this Italian-flavoured district has artisan shops, leafy squares and a relaxed café scene.
- Museums. The Red Cross & Red Crescent Museum, the Art & History Museum, or the Patek Philippe watch museum, depending on your interest.
Getting back to the airport in time
The same 6-minute train runs back from Cornavin to the airport every few minutes until late evening, so returning is quick. If you’re cutting it fine, carrying heavy bags, or travelling as a group, a pre-booked transfer picks you up in the city and drops you at departures — door to door, no timetable to watch. Either way, aim to be back at security with your usual pre-flight buffer.
