The free 80-minute ticket at GVA.
Geneva Airport hands every arriving passenger a free Unireso ticket — valid 80 minutes on all city transport. Here’s where to get it and how to use it.
The machine in baggage claim
A blue dispenser stands beside the baggage carousels in the arrivals hall. Press the big button — a paper ticket prints in 2 seconds. No payment, no scan, no app.
The free transport voucher is funded by Geneva Airport SA and operated by Unireso (the regional transport network). It was introduced in 2014 to encourage public transport over taxis. The dispenser is located in the baggage hall, attached to a column near carousels 4 and 5 — look for a low blue kiosk with “Free public transport” text. The ticket prints instantly: pull the paper voucher from the slot.
You don’t need to scan a boarding pass or show ID — the machine is open-access for anyone in the arrivals hall. If the dispenser is empty (rare, happens in peak ski-Saturday hours), the airport information desk in arrivals hands out paper tickets on request. Each ticket is single-use, single-person — group travellers each take their own from the machine.
Train, bus, tram — zone 10
80 minutes from time of issue, on any Unireso transport within zones 10 + 21 (Geneva canton and immediate French border).
| Mode | Line | From GVA to | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train (CFF/SBB) | S-Bahn / IR / IC | Geneva Cornavin (main station) | 7 min |
| Bus TPG | #5 | Cornavin via Place des Nations | 22 min |
| Bus TPG | #10 | Rive (city centre / Old Town) | 28 min |
| Bus TPG | #23 | Carouge (south Geneva) | 40 min |
| Bus TPG | #28 | Jardin Botanique | 25 min |
| Tram TPG | #14 (via Cornavin) | Bernex (west) / Meyrin | 30–35 min |
| Mouettes (boat) | M1–M4 | Across Lac Léman (within zone 10) | 10–20 min |
The 80 minutes starts at the printed issue time on the ticket, not at boarding. You can chain multiple rides within those 80 minutes — train to Cornavin, then bus to Old Town, then tram to Plainpalais all on the same voucher, as long as the last validation is within the window. Most ticket inspectors will tolerate a 5–10 minute overrun if you can show your printed time, but don’t count on it.
5 things to avoid
The ticket is generous but bounded — most travellers stumble on the same five things.
Don’t go past Versoix or Lancy-Pont-Rouge
The voucher covers Geneva canton (zone 10) + 1 French border zone. Lausanne, Nyon, Annecy are NOT covered — buy a separate CFF ticket at the machine.
It’s not valid for departures
Only issued in the arrivals hall after landing. If you’re flying out of GVA, you must buy a regular Unireso ticket (CHF 3.00 single, CHF 3.50 train).
It’s not valid for ski-resort buses
The voucher covers Geneva-city transport. Buses to Chamonix, Megève, Annecy or Évian are separate operators (Alpybus, Mountain Drop-Offs, etc.) — book separately.
Don’t lose it in your bag
If a TPG controller asks for your ticket and you can’t find it, you’re fined CHF 100 (or CHF 80 if paid on the spot). Snap a photo as a backup.
Hotels have their own ticket too
If you’re staying overnight, your hotel issues a free Geneva Transport Card valid for your entire stay — covers the whole zone 10 network, including transit back to the airport.
The free 80-min Geneva ticket — FAQ
Is the train from Geneva Airport really free for new arrivals?
Yes — within 80 minutes of issue, using the free Unireso voucher you pick up in the baggage hall. It covers the CFF/SBB train Geneva Airport → Geneva Cornavin (and most Geneva canton stations), all TPG buses and trams in zone 10, and the Mouettes boats on Lac Léman. Beyond zone 10 (Lausanne, Nyon, France beyond the immediate border), you need a separate CFF or SNCF ticket.
Where exactly is the free ticket machine at GVA?
In the baggage claim hall, attached to a column between carousels 4 and 5. A blue low-profile kiosk with “Free public transport — Transport public gratuit” labelling. Press the prominent button; the ticket prints instantly. No login, no scan, no payment. If the machine is empty, ask at the airport information desk in the arrivals hall.
Does the free ticket work for the bus to Chamonix?
No. The voucher covers only Unireso (Geneva canton + immediate French border zone 21). Ski-resort buses to Chamonix, Megève, Verbier and Annecy are run by private operators (Alpybus, Mountain Drop-Offs, BlaBlaCar Bus, FlixBus, GVA Geneva Shuttle) and ticket separately. Prices: Chamonix CHF 25–35, Megève CHF 35–50, Verbier CHF 40–60 one way per person.
How long is the free ticket valid?
80 minutes from the printed issue time (not from your first ride). Within those 80 minutes you can take any number of rides on train, bus, tram or boat in zones 10+21. The Geneva Transport Card (free at your hotel for your stay) is a more generous alternative if you’re spending the night.
What if I arrive at night when transport is closed?
The train from GVA runs roughly 05:00–00:30; bus #5 runs 04:50–01:00; night bus N1 covers the rest from 01:00–04:00 (also free with the voucher). Outside those hours, take a taxi (metered, ~CHF 45 to city) or a pre-booked Mercedes (CHF 100 fixed, 60-min free wait, English-speaking).
Late arrival or 4+ people with bags?
Skip the bus queue. Mercedes pre-booked from CHF 100, driver waits with a sign in arrivals.
