Geneva Airport to Flaine — Bauhaus concrete in a snow bowl.
Flaine sits in a high bowl above the Arve valley, a 1960s resort of raw concrete and Vasarely sculpture that people either love or find baffling. It is the closest of the Grand Massif resorts to Geneva, and the transfer is short by alpine standards. It is 88 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 h 18 by road on the A40. Here is every option compared, with real journey times and what each is best for.

There is no station in the resort itself.
The nearest railway station is Cluses, down in the Arve valley. From there the resort is reached by road, so any rail itinerary ends with a coach, taxi or transfer for the final climb.
That last leg is what makes the difference on a winter Saturday. A pre-booked vehicle covers the whole journey in one go, which is why most people arriving with equipment skip the connection entirely.
Car rental & the road
A40 does most of the work.
The route leaves the airport on the A1 then the A41 then the A40 and covers 88 km in about 1 h 18 when the road is clear. The motorway runs up the Arve valley to Cluses, then the road climbs to the resort — the only demanding stretch, and the one that closes to traffic without winter equipment.
Swiss motorways require a motorway vignette. Most cars hired on the Swiss side of Geneva Airport already carry one, but the airport also has a French sector — check at the rental desk rather than assuming.
