Geneva Airport to Villars — a balcony above the Rhône valley.

Villars sits on a terrace above the Rhône valley, facing the Dents du Midi. It is one of the closest Swiss ski resorts to Geneva Airport, and the only mountain part of the journey is the climb from Ollon at the very end. It is 121 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 h 32 by road on the A1 et A9. Here is every option compared, with real journey times and what each is best for.

By train

Geneva Airport has its own station directly beneath the terminal, so the rail journey starts without leaving the building.

The fastest connection to Villars-sur-Ollon takes about 02:09. It takes 1 change. A representative morning service is the IR95 from Genève-Aéroport at 09:14 to Aigle at 10:47 then the B144 from Aigle, gare at 10:50 to Villars-sur-Ollon, gare at 11:23.

The rail journey uses the main line down the Rhône valley, then the mountain railway up from Bex. It is a pleasant ride, but with skis and a family the changes add up.

Driving yourself

Car rental & the road

A1 et A9 does most of the work.

The route leaves the airport on the A1 then the A9 and covers 121 km in about 1 h 32 when the road is clear. The climb from the valley floor is a series of hairpins that demands winter tyres and, after heavy snow, chains.

Swiss motorways require a motorway vignette. Most cars hired on the Swiss side of Geneva Airport already carry one, but the airport also has a French sector — check at the rental desk rather than assuming.

Questions

Geneva to Villars — FAQ

How long does it take to get from Geneva Airport to Villars?

About 1 h 32 by road for the 121 km. By train, roughly 02:09.

Is there a direct train from Geneva Airport to Villars?

No. The quickest connection takes 1 change and about 02:09 in total.

Do I need snow chains to reach Villars?

The motorway section never requires them, but the final climb from Ollon can, after heavy snowfall. Winter tyres are the practical minimum from December to March.

Is Villars good for beginners?

Its reputation is as a family resort with gentle terrain and a large ski school, rather than a destination for steep skiing.

Is a private transfer worth it from Geneva to Villars?

The last twenty minutes are hairpins on a mountain road. Doing that in a pre-booked vehicle with a driver who knows it is the main argument.
