Geneva Airport to Lucerne — the lake, the bridge, the mountains.

Lucerne sits at the western tip of a fjord-shaped lake, with the Chapel Bridge across the river and Pilatus and the Rigi rising behind it. It is the most visited city in central Switzerland and the usual base for the mountain excursions above it. It is 263 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 h 44 by road on the A1. Here is every option compared, with real journey times and what each is best for.

Public transport

By train

Geneva Airport has its own station directly beneath the terminal, so the rail journey starts without leaving the building.

The fastest connection to Luzern takes about 03:16. It runs direct from the airport station. A representative morning service is the IR15 from Genève-Aéroport at 09:45 to Luzern at 13:01.

The rail route crosses the Mittelland with a change, and arrives at a station on the lakefront — one of the better-placed city stations in the country.

Budget

Shared shuttle & bus

The cheapest ticket, and what it costs you in time.

FlixBus sells Geneva to Luzern from CHF 42, with a fastest journey of about 3 h 00. The connection is not a single coach — part of the journey runs by rail or requires a change.

The coach is the cheapest ticket, but the connection uses the rail network for part of the way and gains nothing on the train.

Driving yourself

Car rental & the road

A1 does most of the work.

The route leaves the airport on the A1 then the A9 and covers 263 km in about 2 h 44 when the road is clear. The motorway runs past Bern and Olten before dropping into the Reuss valley; it is the standard Swiss transit route and busy with it.

Swiss motorways require a motorway vignette. Most cars hired on the Swiss side of Geneva Airport already carry one, but the airport also has a French sector — check at the rental desk rather than assuming.
